About Unity of Boerne

Circa 1930 as The Balcones School,

1 of ~ 30 district school houses in Kendall County

Boerne was settled by German immigrants who styled themselves as “Free Thinkers.”  They chose to think, feel, and act from their own abilities and not from the strict religious ideas they grew up with.  At Unity of Boerne, in a very real sense, we stand on the shoulders of these rugged individuals.

We are motivated to engage with our inner qualities of wisdom and love and seek to live lives of balance and coherence.  We, like our Free Thinking forebears, understand that every person is an expression of God.  We honor and celebrate that which we call “the Christ within” all people. We each in our own way and as a community know the limits of labels and concepts.  “God,” “the Divine,” and “sacred” mean many different things and we realize that the True Essence of Creation as a whole and the many things that make up the visible presence of the Universe are but part of reality.

We promote harmony and peace as natural abilities within all. Recognizing the value of religion, we understand that truth is found in many writings from all of history and from many different disciplines.  The lessons we learn are taken from all of life- from books, from discussions, from engaging with others, from seemingly simple and insignificant things in life.

The Unity of Boerne Church Building turns 90 years old this year. The building itself has quite an interesting history; originally built as a district school (1 of some 30 in Kendall County) in the late 1800’s; at some point it was destroyed by fire, and rebuilt. We know this current larger building was in use in the 1930’s, as the Balcones School, as it was known, on the then main road to San Antonio, now known as Boerne Stage Road.  We sometimes close our eyes and just try to sense how it must’ve felt to be standing in that classroom all those years ago, with the teacher not only teaching one age group at the old blackboard which is still there, but also having older students assigned to help the younger and more challenged students in other corners of the room. Literally helping each other to grow. It would almost seem as if the building was a natural to become a church; focused on its own higher education and fertile for enthusiasm in one’s own learning and progress. And such is the phenomena our church ‘family’ members sense each time we come into the sanctuary for service, and feel instantly both part of something greater and in touch with the energy of teaching and learning left imprinted in the walls, floors, and yes, …on that old chalkboard.

The Five Principles

Unity has been called ‘A practical approach’ to spiritual living.   The five principles upon which followers of Unity base their faith are:

1. God is Good

God is absolute good and everywhere present. There is only One Power and One Presence active in the universe and in my life, God, the Good, Omnipotent. God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.

Biblical reference: Deut. 6:4-5

2. People are Good

Since humans are made in the image of God, they have a spark of divinity within them and therefore are inherently good also.
Our essence is of God; therefore, we are inherently good. This God essence was fully expressed in Jesus, the Christ. We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.

Biblical reference: John 14:20

3. Thoughts Create Experiences

Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thoughts. We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind.
We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.

Biblical reference: Galatians 6:7

4. Prayer is Connection

Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity and everything good. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.
There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God.   Biblical reference: Matthew 5:37 and 6:6

5. Action is needed

Knowing and understanding the laws of life—also called truth—is not enough. A person must live the truth that he or she knows. Through thoughts, words and actions, we live in the truth we know. Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.    Biblical reference: James 2:14-18

Curious about Unity?  It’s easy to find out about the founders, the stimulus, the inspiration, and early days of Unity.   The Unity spiritual movement began in the late 1800s; and was based on prayer and the power of mind over body.    Over the years, the founders and principal contributors identified and developed ways of practical application of the 5 Principles of Unity Thought, and understanding the 12 Powers, which each and every human child of God is born with.
